Appointment of a Former Al-Qaeda Member to the Syrian Supreme Fatwa Council

On September 18, 2015, a disturbing video surfaced showing Abdul Rahim Atoun, also known as Abu Abdullah al-Shami, reading the execution verdicts for 56 soldiers. This gruesome event took place on the runway of Abu al-Duhur Military Airport in #Idlib, #Syria. Abdul Rahim Atoun, a prominent member of Jabhat al-Nusra, the former al-Qaeda branch in Syria, was seen overseeing the execution of these soldiers in the video.

In a recent development, on March 28, 2025, Abdul Rahim Atoun was appointed by Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the leader of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (#HTS), to a significant position in the organization. Atoun has been designated as a member of the Supreme Fatwa Council in Syria. This appointment underscores his continued influence within the extremist groups operating in the region.
